Importance of Oral Hygiene

oral hygieneThere is an intimate connection between your oral and overall health; problems in your mouth can affect the rest of your body.

Our body’s natural defenses and good oral health care, like daily brushing and flossing, can keep bad bacteria under control. Without proper oral hygiene, bacteria can reach dangerous levels that can lead to oral infections, tooth decay, and gum disease.

Due to these related risks, be sure to tell your dentist if you’ve experienced any changes in your overall health, or are using medication.

  • Here are a few ways you can practice good oral hygiene each day:
  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day.
  • Carry a floss with you and floss after every meal and before going to bed.
  • Eat a healthy diet and limit between-meal snacks.
  • Replace your toothbrush every three to four months. An electronic toothbrush, such as the Phillips Sonicare is highly recommended.
  • Visit your dentist on a regular basis for checkups, at least once every six months.

If you’re experiencing oral health problems, talk to your doctor. Remember, investing in your oral health is key to overall health and wellness.
